Cairo - Arabstoday

Giza's Karmet Ibn Hanie Cultural Centre in February will screen three influential films from the US, Sweden and Soviet-era Russia. On 12 February, the centre will show "New York Stories" by celebrated US directors Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Woody Allen. The film includes three different vignettes: Scorsese's Life Lessons, Coppola's Life without Zoë and Allen's Oedipus Wrecks, all of which are set in New York City. On 19 February, the centre will screen Swedish film Cries and Whispers by Ingmar Bergman. The film, which, like much of Bergman’s work, tackles existentialist issues and the question of death, tells the story of a dying woman and her two siblings. And on 26 February, the centre will screen Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Russian director Sergei Parajanov. This film was blacklisted by the Soviet Union because of its unorthodox style, which challenged the usual "social realism" approved by the state. All screenings will begin at 6:30pm.
