Culture Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa received here today a delegation from the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).
Revamping heritage and heritage markets, particularly Al-Qaysariya market in Muharraq and the Old Manama market, was discussed.
The Minister affirmed the importance of those markets, being means to keep record of the country’s economic and social history.
She said that the Ministry of Culture’s plans to preserve those markets and revive their pivotal role, noting that the revamping process will be carried out within a comprehensive plan of the cities so as to maintain the identity of those iconic suqs.
The two sides highlighted the importance of providing car parks and ensuring safety requirements in those markets in order to be able to attract visitors.
The Culture Ministry and the Traditional Markets’ Committee at BCCI agreed to visit to Old Manama Suq next week and host a lecture on ways to revive old markets, to be delivered by Dr. Ala’a Al-Habshi.
