Yemen, where multiple suicide bombers killed at least 142 people Friday, has seen a series of attacks since the regime and opposition signed a transition accord in November 2011.
Friday's attacks were the first to be claimed by the Islamic State group's branch in Yemen, where the most active jihadist group is Al-Qaeda.
2012
- Feb 25: A suicide attack on a presidential palace in the southeast kills 26 Republican Guards on the day Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi is sworn in as president. Al-Qaeda claims responsibility.
- March 4: 185 soldiers and 25 Al-Qaeda militants killed in an attack on a barracks at Koud in the southern province of Abyan.
- May 21: 96 soldiers killed and hundreds wounded when a suicide bomber blows himself up in Sanaa, narrowly missing Defence Minister Mohamed Nasser Ahmed. Al-Qaeda claims the attack.
- August 4: At least 49 people killed in a suicide attack in the southern town of Jaar targeting military auxiliaries.
2013
- December 5: Al-Qaeda launches a spectacular assault on the defence ministry in Sanaa, in which 56 are killed. The group says its objective was the control room for drones targeting its fighters in Yemen.
2014
- October 9: A powerful suicide bombing in Sanaa's Al-Tahrir square kills 47 people in an attack on supporters of Shiite Huthi insurgents. The attack is claimed by Al-Qaeda which had threatened a merciless war against the Huthis, who swept into Sanaa in September.
- December 16: A suicide car bombing at Rada in central Yemen targeting a Huthi leader kills 26 people including 16 children. It is blamed on Al-Qaeda.
- December 31: A suicide bomber dressed as a woman kills 49 people at Ibb in central Yemen when he blows himself up at a celebration by Huthi militia supporters.
2015
- January 7: 40 killed and 71 wounded in a car bombing at a police academy in Sanaa. Yemen's top security body blames Al-Qaeda, but a leader of Al-Qaeda in Yemen denies any involvement.
- March 20: Triple suicide bombings kill 142 people and wound hundreds at mosques in Sanaa attended by Huthi militiamen who have seized the capital. The IS claims the attacks.
