Berlin - UPI

A handgun electronically linked to its owner is safer because no one else can fire it, says the weapon's German manufacturer. The so-called "smart gun" is controlled by a chip in the owner's watch and the gun and watch must be in close proximity for the weapon to fire, TheLocal.de reported Monday. The gun is unlocked by entering a personal identification number on the watch. If the gun is knocked out of the owner's hand or otherwise loses radio contact with the chip, it automatically deactivates, said Munich-based arms maker Armatix. The pistol's safety measures have gained supporters in the United States but critics say it is too complicated to use in urgent situations. The gun costs about $1,400.
