The UAE has become a member of the UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, COPUOS, in a move that allows the UAE to take advantage of the technology and the science of space technology to improve sustainable development in the economic, social, environmental sectors.
The Fourth Committee of the General Assembly, which adopts an annual resolution on international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, adopted the UAE as a member in the committee yesterday, in line with the space sector policies of the UAE's scientific and technological diverse and initiatives.
The UAE has made important accomplishments in the field of outer space, such as the establishment of the UAE Space Agency in 2014, with a vision based on organising the space sector as well as contributing to the national economy, maintaining sustainable development, and preparing a distinct generation of qualified national cadres, to build local, regional and global strategic partnerships in the field, in addition to its participation in international and regional conferences and seminars regarding the space sector.
The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was established in 1959 and has 84 members. It governs the exploration and use of space for peace, security and development.
