Two companies came up with a rather impressive claim: caffeine-laced underwear will help the wearer lose weight.
Well those claims caught the eye of the Federal Trade Commission.
The FTC went after those companies -- Norm Thompson Outfitter and Wacol America -- for deceptive advertising.
Under the settlement, the two companies would pay a combined $1.5 million dollars.
An ad in one magazine described Wacol's iPants as being made with "microfibers with embedded microcapsules containing caffeine to promote fat destruction." according to the complaint filed by the FTC.
The government also said there were descriptions making similar claims elsewhere on the product.
In the complaint against Norm Thompson Outfitters, the FTC said the company's Lytess cellulite-slimming shorts also made false claims.
Those shorts claimed to be made with micro-capsules containing caffeine and other ingredients that can result in their wearers losing two inches off of their hips and one inch off of their thighs in less than a month.
According to the FTC, the claims that caffeine can shed inches and smooth cellulite is not backed up by legitimate science.
The agency also said the claims made by both companies relied on two clinical trials "with significant methodological flaws."
