A woman was arrested on Sunday for stabbing her one-year-old daughter to death in Kagiso on the West Rand, police said. Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said police arrested the 19-year-old mother around 3am on Sunday at her house in Kagiso. "The little girl was found with five stab wounds to the chest. The child was still breathing when police arrived." He said the woman had taken an overdose of pills before stabbing her child. She phoned family members to confess about the murder. Family members alerted the police. "The mother confessed to police that she had killed her child and a suicide note was found near her." The child was later declared dead on the scene and the woman was treated by paramedics, said Sibiya. She was taken into police custody and will appear in the Kagiso Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder. -Sapa
