Manama - Arab Today

The Shura Council has expressed its pride in the advanced level reached by Bahrain in preserving and protecting women, as well as granting them their rights and preventing any kind of violence against them.
Bahraini women’s strides are the fruitful outcome of the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin  Isa Al Khalifa, the implementation of various programmes and plans by the government, led by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the constant support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, in addition to the unwavering interest of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of HM the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), and her constant keenness on ensuring that Bahraini women are always distinguished at all gatherings, and that that they enjoy their full rights according to the legal systems and frameworks, the Shura said.
In a statement marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, celebrated annually on November 25, and themed “Leave no one behind: end violence against women and girl” this year, the Shura highlighted the Legislature’s role in optimising the Bahraini women’s achievements through unanimously passing the Family Law, which was ratified by HM King Hamad, noting that the law, which has taken effect, provides a new legislative reference for protecting Bahraini women.
The Shura also lauded Bahrain’s accession to international agreements and covenants pertaining to protecting women’s rights and eliminating violence against them, as well as its keenness to amend national laws to make them in accordance with such agreements and conventions, including Decree-Law 70/2014 on amending Decree-Law 5/2002 on the Kingdom’s Accession to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
Decree-Law 70/2014 stipulates the kingdom’s commitment to the provisions to of clauses 4 and 16 of CEDAW’s articles 2 and 16, respectively.
The Shura praised the role played by the civil society organisations in Bahrain to ensure the success of efforts to combat violence against women through implementing awareness-raising programmes and campaigns targeting all social segments.
