There has been a dramatic increase in the number of Omani women dying in traffic accidents compared to the same period last year.
The recent data released by the government states that this year, for the months of March, April and May, 36 Omani women lost their lives on roads. During the same period last year, that figure was 23 — a 56.5 per cent increase.
The number of deaths on the roads over the same period fell by 10 per cent, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information. The total number of deaths caused by accidents has also fallen, from 263 to 236.
The number of expats losing their lives on the roads has also dropped, from 96 last year to 62 this year. The total number of injuries has also decreased, with a fall of 4.7 per cent.
The number of Omanis injured has gone down from 1,016 to 935, an eight per cent decline. The number of injured female expats has declined by 2.8 per cent while the number of injured Oman females has increased by 2.5 per cent.
The report also recorded a downturn of 21.1 per cent on road accidents from 2,033 to 1,604 compared to the same period last year.
