Sintok - Bernama

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) will call up students reported to have sold 1Malaysia Book Vouchers (BB1M) to a couple last month. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said it wants to record statements from the 113 students before action is taken. "We realised about the sale of the book vouchers as some individuals had advertised to exchange them for cash in campus. "After investigation, our security people detained a Selangor couple who rented a UUM apartment on Jan 15 before making a police report," he told reporters here today. He was commenting newspaper reports today that police arrested a couple yesterday on suspicion of buying at least 113 book vouchers from UUM students. The couple who own a bookshop in Kuala Lumpur was said to offer RM180 to students for BB1M book vouchers worth RM200, thus making a RM20 profit. Mustafa said that he has the names of all the students involved and will call them up as soon as the second semester begins. "The couple have no connection with UUM and their presence in campus were to buy book vouchers from the students." Regretting the incident, he described the case as isolated as it only involved 113 of over 30,000 students who received the book vouchers. "They should have used the vouchers to buy books, teaching and learning equipment and not sell them off." He urged UUM students with problems using the book vouchers to use them at UUM's cooperative bookstore.
