As many as three cases have been reported in the campus in last one week, which involved the presence of outsiders. Be it the clash of two groups of students near the Department of Chemistry, wherein bats and wooden canes were used to thrash other group members, or the scuffle near the PU market following an accident, wherein rods and sharp-edged weapons were used to damage car. In both the cases, the rods were found in the vehicles of the accused. Panjab University campus When questioned about the reasons why the PU security is not checking the vehicles for the presence of any kind of potential weapon, PU Chief Security Officer, Professor Anil Monga said, “We keep a constant check on vehicles during the election season, but it becomes difficult to continue it all round the year. PU is a public place, and it is difficult to regulate the entry of people who come to the varsity, as it will only cause inconvenience to the general public, and affect the routine life.” Elaborating on the involvement of outsiders in such incidents, Professor Monga said, that these outsiders are largely former students of the varsity, who come to meet their friends, and its difficult to restrict their entry. In another incident, the jeep of a hostel resident was set ablaze at midnight. “Personal animosity was the reason behind the incidence. The incident took place in the parking of Boys’ Hostel no 2 and 3, which is on the backside, while the security personnel are stationed at the gate. Security reached the spot immediately,” he said. Highlighting that the PU security personnel are stationed at all strategic points in the varsity, and there is Quick Reaction Team (QTR) comprising of five members always on the move, the PU Security officer said that they might have to increase the patrolling of security personnel in the campus.
