Dubai - Arabstoday

Dubai Women's College (DWC), a Higher Colleges of technology flagship institution, welcomed today 275 fresh students at the beginning of the second semester for the academic year 2011-12. This brings the total number of students attending the college in the current academic year to 2416 students including 275 new ones. Dr. Amna Al Mazam, Dean of DWC Health Sciences and Student Development, said the first year of studies is a fundamental year in which students are taught English, Computer, and Math. During that year, students are divided into two groups: the first attends the Foundations' year while the second directly enters the first year depending on the CEPA level and the grades accrued at the secondary school certificate examinations. Meanwhile, DWC organized a week-long orientation programme for the fresh students and their parents. Dr. Howard Reed, Director of Dubai Women's College gave a welcome address while Fatma Thani, Supervisor of Student Affairs Department and Shamsa Juma, the Students' Counselor, elaborated on students' concerns and their move from school to the university life. The programme also featured a tour of the college's facilities and services, including the Student Centre, the library and the Fitness Centre, in addition to the cafeteria where healthy, saturated fat-free food is offered. Furthermore, students were introduced to different specializations at DWC and career opportunities to help them make their proper job decisions in the future. Academics in different specializations in the college, meanwhile, made presentations on study courses. Moreover, students in different majors presented their experiences to the newcomers. The orientation programme provided by the Dubai Women's College offers information about different disciplines and helps students make their choices in a way that suits their preferences and the job market requirements. In her concluding remarks, Dr. Al Mazam expressed appreciation to students for their keenness to be enrolled in DWC and choosing it for their higher education. "This highlights the quality and distinguished academic programmes of the college, its high-caliber technical facilities and keenness to catch up with the highest standards supported by His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology," she concluded.
