Moroccan universities are not faring
Rabat - Arab Today

Moroccan universities are not faring well on the international scale, according to the latest World Universities Ranking published by the British magazine Times Higher Education.

As the only global university performance table to judge world class universities across 77 countries, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-2017 lists the 980 top universities in the world.

Based on universities’ teaching methods, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, Moroccan universities came at the bottom of the list, as Marrakech’s University of Cadi Ayyad and Rabat’s Mohammed V University were ranked as the 801th and 802th among the 980 listed institutions.

Cadi Ayyad University, one of the most prestigious institutions in Morocco registered a sharp decline in its ranking, as in the 2015 edition of the report, the university came in the 301st position.

Many African universities were ranked ahead of their Moroccan counterparts, with South Africa’s Cape Town University ranked 171st, although it fell 23 points in the ranking compared to the previous year (148th).

Despite its decline, the University of Uganda was ranked 401st, while the University of Guinnessy ranked between 601st and 800th.

Arab universities also came ahead of their Moroccan counterparts. The American University in Cairo ranked 601st worldwide, followed by Egypt’s Ain Shams University.

Oxford University came at the top of the list, followed by the University of Cambridge, which jumped from fourth to second, followed by UCLA in third place.

The magazine pointed out that Latin American countries and African countries are facing difficulties in the field of education, which makes them far from competitive in these international classifications.

According to the British magazine, Chinese universities made significant progress in this year’s ranking, with two universities among the top 30, while European universities maintained the same ranking.
