Doha - Arabstoday

Qatar Petroleum’s Dukhan Learning Centre (DLC) recently hosted five students of Year-11 from QP’s Dukhan English School (DES) for an intensive work-experience project that enabled them to gain hands-on knowledge of how a vocational and industrial training facility works. Under the project the students familiarised themselves with the operations of the learning centre. They interacted closely with the centre’s instructors, administrative staff as well as course participants. They also attended lectures, workshops and practical sessions on mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and process disciplines. In addition, they prepared and delivered presentations as well as held conversation classes in the centre’s English department. The three male and two female students were especially interested and impressed with the technical and engineering side of DLC’s operations, and they were also inspired by the practical workshops, modern facilities and training simulators. They even had a session on the drilling rig cyber chair, which simulates how drilling is done in an oilfield. At the end of the week, senior DLC officials presented the students with Certificates of Participation for successfully completing the work-experience project. The students spoke about how much they had learned, been inspired and enjoyed themselves during the week. They also said that the experience had reinforced their interest in pursuing future careers in engineering and training. Managed by QP’s Corporate Training Department, the Dukhan Learning Centre (DLC) is a state-of-the-art facility that was formally inaugurated in March this year by HE the Minister for Energy and Industry Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada. The centre has a total built-up area of nearly 3,200sq m and its range of facilities includes classrooms, workshops, demonstration rooms, a language laboratory and a simulation room. The Dukhan English School (DES) is an international school owned by QP and available to the children of QP employees who are based in the area. Established in the early 1950s, it is one of the oldest English-medium schools in Qatar, and is committed in policy and practice to the delivery of the National Curriculum of England and Wales. DES students experience a balanced range of subjects, which prepares them for higher education, lifelong learning and successful employment.
