Being at the right place at the right time is crucial for the doctors in the fictional HankMed on USA network's Royal Pains. But in the season seven premiere, it cost Physician Associate, Divya Katdare (Reshma Shetty), more than she bargained for.
In the show's ending, Divya springs into action when she sees a young boy fall across the street and leaves her baby, Sashi, in the car to aid the victim.
Moments later, she returns to the vehicle to find it surrounded by police, who told her that Sashi will have to be taken into child services. When Divya protested, she was immediately arrested.
Fans sounded off on Twitter to scold Divya's quick decision, many saying that she should have either called for help or take Sashi with her.
But Shetty, who plays the compassionate, strong-willed medical professional, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and said that she knew Divya's actions would stir up conflict.
"I love moments that can produce debate, and there are two sides to it," Shetty said. "Maybe she should have taken the baby; maybe this or that."
The star also said that she, too, was "shocked" by the events that unfolded that episode. According to People magazine, Shetty will be welcoming her first child, a girl, this fall. So seeing the ending affected her "a little bit."
Another shocker was seeing Divya and her ex-fiancé Raj (Rupac Gin) back together during the premiere. When Shetty was probed about the relationship, she said: "They really matured very quickly in life. They're two people that have changed so much, but there's always a core that remains, and that's what's drawing them together."
Divya's relationship with concierge doctor Jeremiah Sacani (Ben Shenkman) in season six also started some buzz among fans.
Viewers know that Jeremiah and Divya have a strong bond and would like to see more from the two this season. During the interview Shetty revealed that there is more in store for the couple that the Jeremiah-Divya fans "will enjoy."
As far as Divya's arrest, Shetty reassured fans that things will start making more sense in upcoming episodes.
