London - Arabstoday

The international community unanimously commended the constitutional reforms proposed by King Mohammed VI, whose text will be put to a referendum on July 1, the BBC said on Thursday. The EU positively reacted to the reforms in the new supreme law of Morocco, the BBC wrote in its website. "It is a significant step and signals a clear commitment to democracy and respect for human rights," the British broadcaster said quoting a statement by the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele. In Washington, the BBC recalled, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton termed King Mohammed's reform proposals a "model for others in the region" and said they held great promise for Moroccans. In the same vein, the Arab League's outgoing secretary general, Amr Moussa, praised the measures as "an important step for securing the pillars of democracy". The BBC also shed light on the context preceding the announcement by HM King Mohammed VI of the broad lines of the new draft constitution which, inter alia, enshrines the expansion of “individual and collective liberties and the reinforcement of human rights."
