The journalist detained in Khartoum spoke with her mother on phone briefly on Thursday. The Sudanese ambassador to Cairo Kamal Hassan Ali announced on Thursday that Egyptian journalist Shaimaa Adel, who has been detained in Khartoum for 11 days now, after being arrested while covering the anti-regime protests, will be released and deported to Cairo by next Monday. For the first time since her arrest for not having a press permit, following many days of interrogation in Khartoum, the daily newspaper Al Watan’s reporter Shaimaa Adel spoke with her mother for few minutes, saying she was well-treated by the Sudanese authorities. Shaimaa Adel's mother had started a sit-in, going on hunger strike outside the Sudanese Embassy in Garden City demanding the immediate release of her daughter. Journalists in Cairo also organised a series of protests at the Press Syndicate, the Embassy of Sudan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanding her release. During the visit of the Sudanese vice president Ali Othman to Cairo this week, several parties as well former presidential candidates Hamdeen Sabbhai and Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh demanded the immediate release of Shaimiaa Adel. Shaimaa Adel is the the second Egyptian reporter to be arrested in Sudan and deported to Cairo while covering protests against the regime in Khartoum, following Ahram Online and Bloomberg reporter Salma Al-Wardany.
