Volvo is reportedly considering entering the luxury coupe segment with a new model that sits above the C70 coupe-cabrio and competes with the likes of Mercedes E-Coupe. Being bigger than the C70, the car will appropriately be named C90, and it will be a key product for the Swedish manufacturer in its quest to conquer the luxury segment. The C90 will be based on Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architecture(SPA), upon which the next generation Volvo S80 luxury saloon will also be built. It would get the same range of four-cylinder petrol and diesels as well, and it will probably get a hybrid variant as well. Volvo has proved a couple of times before they are capable of making nice, exciting cars with the C30 and more recently the V40. So we’re looking forward to the new C90. Volvo’s sport luxury coupe is yet to get the green light for production. So realistically we’re looking at a 2015 – or beyond – release date.
