After revealing the new third-generation Fiat Panda at Frankfurt last year, an all-wheel drive version has been caught testing. The all-new Panda 4x4 uses a simplistic hydraulic clutch ahead of its rear differential, similar to the previous generation, which will run the rear wheels only once the front-end loses grip. The system added around 100kg in the previous model Panda, so expect a similar increase this time around, with higher, stronger suspension with more travel front and rear to cope with the increased weight. Plastic cladding around pumped wheelarches continues with the new generation, too, as will bespoke front and rear bumpers. The 74bhp 1.3 MultiJet II diesel is the obvious choice to power the heavier four-wheel drive version, however the 1.2-litre 69bhp petrol engine is likely to make an appearance. The third-gen Panda’s two-mode ‘Dualdrive’ electro-hydraulic power steering should make the cut, as will start/stop tech, but it’s expected to miss out on the regular Panda’s robotised automatic and be offered only as a six-speed manual. The all-wheel drive Panda is expected to arrive in showrooms by the end of the year at a price of around £12,000.
