Trust tuning firms like Mansory and Startech to pick vehicles that are already at the pinnacle of luxury as the starting points for their Frankfurt show cars.
Mansory bought 10 cars in total to this year's event from supped up Mercedes to lowered Lamborghinis but the one that really stood out is its first ever tuned Range Rover Autobiography. Land Rover claims that the ‘standard' long-wheel-base Autobiography is one of the most exclusive and luxurious SUVs that money can buy, but clearly, Mansory likes a challenge.
It's reimagined much of the bodywork in carbon fiber, added more aggressive front spoilers and side skirts, and created a unique set of huge, 22-inch alloy wheels to make sure the car catches the eye.
The suspension system can also raise and lower the car to improve aerodynamics and, Mansory being Mansory, it has managed to coax a further 60PS out of the 5-liter supercharged V8 engine and shave almost a second off the 0-100km/h time (4.6 seconds instead of 5.3 seconds).
Inside, owners have carte blanche to create whatever they want from the finest leathers and carbon fiber components.
Startech is also aiming incredibly high with its overhauling of Bentley's flagship sports limousine, the Mulsanne. However, and some might say, 'thankfully', these improvements are focused on the interior. Taking "going for a picnic" as its theme, the company has created a bespoke picnic basket that fits into a hidden self-opening and closing drawer in the car's trunk. The basket contains porcelain table wear for four plus silver cutlery. There's also a special safety deposit box in the cabin that can only be opened or closed via a fingerprint scan, while the in-car entertainment has been taken up a notch thanks to a new computer system based on a Mac Mini that powers an on-board productivity and multimedia entertainment set up.
Lithuanian company AG Excalibur might not be as well known as its German tuning and customization peers but that could all change after this year's show thanks to the AG Alligator, one of two cars it unveiled at Frankfurt.
Based on the BMW X6M (once again a flagship) the company has created a truly unique exterior package hand-formed from composite materials that adds 25cm to the car's length and 10cm to its height, just enough to be able to accommodate a set of dual color 26-inch alloys.
The front headlights and grille are also unique and the interior which features alligator skin trim (hence the car's name) is finished to the standard one would expect from the competition. AG Excalibur wouldn't reveal exactly what was under the oversized hood but did confirm that one of the reasons for adding such large wheels was so that the company could fit much bigger brakes.
