Abu Dhabi - WAM

Emirates Aluminium (EMAL), the new state-of-the-art smelter development in Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi, has again expressed its corporate support for global environmental initiatives by supporting the annual Masdar-hosted World Future Energy Summit (WFES) for the fifth consecutive year - having first sponsored the event in 2010. EMAL's role as an Associate Sponsor of WFES 2014, which takes place at Abu Dhabi Nation Exhibition Centre from 20 to 22 January, reflects the company's deep-seated commitment to sustainability, with specific emphasis on protecting the environment through efforts to minimise the impact of its operations. Ranked as the world's foremost event dedicated to renewable energies, energy efficiency and clean technologies, WFES enjoys the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Held as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, WFES 2014 includes a world-class conference, an international exhibition, the Project '&' Finance Village, the Young Future Energy Leaders programme, as well as a number of corporate meetings and concurrent social events. Aspiring to excellence in all areas of its operations, EMAL's approach to environmental protection is multi-faceted. The smelter incorporates advanced DX and DX+ reduction cell technologies (developed in the UAE by Dubai Aluminium) which operate at higher amperages and thus achieving lower specific energy consumption rates with associated reductions in fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The company has also deployed the most sustainable technologies available worldwide in other areas of the smelter complex - such as the power plant, carbon plant, and casting operations - in order to reduce total emissions in line with Abu Dhabi Environment Agency requirements to minimise its carbon footprint. Moreover, global best practices have been adopted for the EMAL environmental management system, which includes strategies to optimise consumption of energy and water; maintain ambient air quality; sustain biodiversity; and minimise the impact of discharge water. Further evidencing EMAL's commitment to the environmental performance excellence, the company joined the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group (ADSG) - a forum of members who have signed the ADSG declaration, thereby committing to adopt best practices in sustainability management and reporting. EMAL qualified as a member of the ADSG - established by the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi, with the support of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi Emirate - through its commitment from inception to develop and implement core values that embed a culture of sustainability; simultaneously supporting efforts to integrate sustainability into the Emirate's economic and social development programmes.
