An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 struck the Chichijima region of Japan's southern Ogasawara archipelago on Tuesday evening, and no tsunami warning has been issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said Tuesday evening.

The quake struck the island, located 240 kilometers north of Iwo Jima, at 11:01 p.m. according to the JMA, at a latitude of 27.9 degrees north and longitude of 142.5 degrees east and at a depth of 20 kilometers.

The temblor registered 2 on Japan's seismic scale that peaks at 7 and was also felt in some parts of Ogasawara Town in the region.

Chichijima island is within the political boundaries of Ogasawara Town in the Ogasawara sub-prefecture, which is administered by Tokyo.

It is the largest island of the southern Ogasawara archipelago, which are also known as the Bonin Islands.

The island lies some 1,200 kilometers south of Japan's capital in the Pacific and its land area of just 24 square kilometers is populated by 2,000 people.

There have been no reports of injury or damage as a result of the quake, according to local media reports.
