The State of Qatar was working to combat desertification and drought and to conserve the environment to achieve food security in dryland countries in order to contribute to stability and peace in the world through working with local, regional and international partners by implementing sustainable solutions to the challenges of agriculture, water and energy in dryland countries. said HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to United Nations Office at Geneva Faisal bin Abdullah Al Henzab. HE added that Qatar launched the global coalition for dryland in 2011, within the context of strengthening international collective effort HE Al Henzab was speaking at a side event, organized by Qatar's permanent delegation entitled "desertification and food security: the empowerment of women", in cooperation with the Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Ms. H. Oliver, and the permanent missions of Belgium and Morocco to the United Nations Office at Geneva, on the sidelines of the 28th session of the Human Rights Council, currently being held in Geneva from 2 to 27 March.
HE Ambassador Al Henzab pointed out that food is essential for human survival, and a crucial element for stability and social and economic progress in all countries, adding that in most dryland desertification leads to loss of soil fertility, and affect productivity and the whole food insecurity.
