Cairo - MENA

Civil defense forces managed on Monday to bring under control the huge fire that broke out in a six-storey hotel in Cairo's downtown district of Attaba on Sunday evening.

At least 30 persons suffered from suffocation and were hospitalized.

MENA correspondent said that firefighters conducted the necessary cooling off operations for the hotel and a nearby building which the fire gutted in the wee hours of Monday.

The hotel was immediately evacuated following the fierce fire.

Security forces cordoned off the site of the fire.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still under investigation.
