Taraji P. Henson and Viola Davis were nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series at the 2015 Emmys.
E! News reported that this the first time in the same year that two women have color have been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series. Before 2013 when Kerry Washington was nominated for Scandal. The last woman of color to be in the category was in 1995, and no woman of color has won the Emmy in the category ever.
The L.A. Times reported that this year television has been marked by diversity thanks to shows like Henson's Empire and Davis' How to Get Away with Murder, and others like Black-ish and Fresh off the Boat.
Empire did not receive any other nominations aside from Henson's nomination. Terrence Howard, who plays the show's lead, was not nominated in the lead actor category.
The 67th Emmy awards will air on Fox on Sept. 20 from Los Angeles at the Microsoft theater and will be hosted by Andy Samberg, star of Brooklyn Nine Nine.
