AMC says it has ordered 10, hourlong episodes of Broke, a new series based on the Danish drama Bankerot.
No casting has been announced yet.
The co-production between AMC Studios and Lionsgate is being adapted by writer/showrunner Clyde Phillips, who will also serve as executive producer.
The program, which is to premiere in 2016, is about best friends who take one last shot at their dream of opening a restaurant together.
"One is a brilliant chef in trouble with the mob and the law, and the other is the best sommelier in the city who is the widowed father of a teenage son," a synopsis said. "Broke is the story of friendship, fatherhood, grief, larceny, arson, drugs, adultery, murder, love -- and blazingly original cooking."
"Clyde Phillips is a supremely talented creator we've known and admired for years," Charlie Collier, AMC's president, said in a statement Thursday. "Through his work on Dexter and Nurse Jackie, Clyde has repeatedly demonstrated his skill for crafting complex, flawed, yet irresistible characters, and we're looking forward to him bringing his continued brilliance to Broke. We're also so happy to be partnering once again with our good friends at Lionsgate after the extraordinary journey we shared on Mad Men."
"We have had the great fortune to work with both Clyde Phillips and AMC for many years and we're delighted the stars have aligned to bring us together on Broke," added Kevin Beggs, chairman of Lionsgate Television Group. "Clyde is a master storyteller with a fascinating take on the series' original characters and their unexpected relationships, and we're excited to be moving forward."
"Broke is unique, edgy and sexy. I can't wait to jump in and help it evolve into a groundbreaking bit of television," remarked Phillips. "More than that, I'm looking forward to continuing what's been a remarkable partnership with Lionsgate, and starting out on an exciting new adventure with AMC."
