The NFL’s Michael Bennett, has ignited a controversy by refusing to go to on a trip to Israel with a group of NFL players, USA Today reported.
When Seattle Seahawks defensive end, Michael Bennett, first heard about the offer of a goodwill trip to Israel with other NFLers, he was excited at the thought of seeing the “remarkable and historic land” for himself. The excitement, however, was short-lived.
According to the USA Today report, Bennett rapidly became disenchanted when he learned the trip’s itinerary would be determined by the Israeli government. An official of the government informed Bennett that he would become an “influencer and opinion-maker” with the trip. Then he would be a goodwill ambassador. Bennett didn’t like the sound of that and decided to give the trip a pass.
Announcing his decision, he posted a simple tweet on Thursday, “I’m not going to Israel.” This was then followed up with a formal statement on the matter Friday, explaining his reasons for the decision not to attend. “I will not be used in such a manner,” Bennett said and continued, “When I go to Israel- and I do intend to go- it will be to see not only Israel but also the West Bank and Gaza so I can see how the Palestinians, who have called this land home for thousands of years, live their lives.”
Bennett cited Muhammed Ali as a major influence and inspiration in his life, saying that “Ali always stood strongly with the Palestinian people.” The NFLer acknowledged that his decision would inspire some and anger others, but his desire to be “a voice for the voiceless” is strong. Standing his ground, he quoted 1968 Olympian John Carlos who said, “There is no partial commitment to justice. You are either in or you’re out.”
Michael Bennett is in.
