The Russian defence ministry said on Wednesday it had launched targeted strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria.
"Russian aerospace forces have launched an air campaign involving surgical strikes against ground targets of the ISIL group terrorists on the territory of Syria," defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.
